Bull Mastiffs - History
Bullmastiffs appeared in the beginning of the 20th century as a mixture of the Old English Mastiff and the British Bulldog. Its function was to assist gamekeepers in the prevention of poaching. So Bullmastiffs are intended to track quietly, cover short distances quickly, to knock down, to bite and pin. Today Bullmastiffs combine the features of a watchdog and a family pet. They are good natured and even tempered, but, as with all larger dogs, Bullmastiffs should be properly socialized and have obedience training. It isn't a dog for the timid and fragile.

Bull Mastiffs - Characteristic Traits
Bullmastiffs are pack animals; they need to communicate with other dogs or with their human family. If the dog is banished and not getting interaction, it sure will be overexcited when led into the house. Not letting the dog be a member of the family can lead to dangerous behavior.
And last but not the least, as a pack dog, the Bullmastiff needs to have a leader. The normal behavior for the dog is to obey the top dog, so make your pet understand that you are the leader. You can take anything he has, get him out of your place anytime you want, eat first and in front of the dog. That's the way to teach Bullmastiffs who is who.
